These salted watermelon margaritas use fresh watermelon that has been cubed and frozen for a frosty cocktail that is perfect for summer!
I’m not watermelon’s biggest fan. It just isn’t my first choice for summer fruit.
Lately, though, I’ve found that I like watermelon flavored things – juices, beers, desserts. I’m not sure why my taste buds make the distinction, but they do.
I was traveling for work a couple weeks ago and I had a cocktail that used watermelon shrub. It was excellent. I wasn’t ready to jump into making a shrub, but after that, getting creative with watermelon was on the back of my mind for sure.
So with watermelon on the brain, when I got home and found them piled up at the farmstand, I grabbed one thinking I could make something interesting with it if I decided I didn’t want to eat it fresh.
After cutting into it and taking a few pictures for fun, I decided to chop some up and freeze it. I was thinking I’d make breakfast shakes with it.
Nope. As it turns out, I made a cocktail. Shocker!
We were around the house last Saturday and I grabbed the tequila and the blender. The bonus of using fresh fruit that has been frozen in cocktails is that you don’t need to add sugar laden mixes and other ingredients. You also get a bit of fiber since the whole fruit is blended right in.
I gave this a little red, white, and blue twist in the images making it perfect for the 4th of July holiday. It’s also nice and frosty for a hot summer day.
I like to salt my melon so I added that twist to the drink. Feel free to leave that out the salt, though, if you’d rather not have it.
Since you are using fresh fruit, sweetness can vary. You might want a little more triple sec, or a little less tequila. It’s really up to you. The melon I got wasn’t quite at peak. It could stand to be a little sweeter. But since we really don’t like sweet cocktails, it worked out perfectly for us.
- 3.5 ounces gold tequila
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- .5 ounces triple sec
- 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 2 to 3 cups cubed frozen watermelon
- Extra sea salt to rim glasses
- Lime and watermelon wedges for garnish
- Pour the tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and sea salt into a high-powered blender. Add 2 cups of the watermelon, cover and blend on high until smooth. Add more watermelon if desired for a thicker drink.
- Transfer the drink to two margarita glasses rimed with sea salt. Garnish with lime and watermelon before serving.
