Links to a Healthy Weekend

May 29, 2010

I really thought two southern Brazil summers had done me in as far as being a fan of the heat. I truly enjoyed my first winter back in the US, but now that things are heating up and summer memories from home are flooding back I have to say I’m excited for the new season!

We put off turning on the AC for as long as we could. The pug was having horrible breathing problems and we just couldn’t bear to watch her struggle any longer so we turned it on this week. (That’s her above trying to find a balance between comfort and a cool floor.)

Each time I feel a cool breeze as I sit in my office chair, I have to stop and ponder the awesomeness of central air technology. This is something we didn’t have in Brazil and I will never take it for granted again! I don’t want to be dependent on it, but oh my, is it nice to have.

Instead of sweating away at my computer and avoiding the oven (except for yesterday’s cookies) I am enjoying summer both inside and out. Also, while it may not be summer yet on the calendar, it did arrive in KY this week. I enjoy every aspect of that except for the humidity. No reason to complain now though because I have central AC!!

Has summer arrived where you are? Or how about winter? I realized yesterday that it is almost winter in Brazil right now and June and July were always my favorite months there.

Well, I may skip a weekend here or there, but the Links to a Healthy Weekend are back today! I hope all my readers in the States enjoy the 3-day weekend and celebrate the freedoms of our country as well as those who have fought for them. In case you have some time for reading, here you go.

How to stop eating processed foods was a book review in the Washington Post. The new book isReal Food Has Curves: How to Get Off Processed Food, Lose Weight, and Love What You Eat. Anyone read it yet? I’ve added to my list.

Rise of food blogs creates pasta paparazzi was an Associated Press article released last week. It will give you a good giggle and I have to say that I’ve never taken my tripod to a restaurant!

Recipe Attribution on Food Blog Forum is a must-read for any food blogger. I’m not sure if you’ve checked out that site yet, but it is proving to be a great resource for us.

Mango & Tomato is having a recipe contest for her blog anniversary. You have to come up with something using both mangoes and tomatoes to enter. I can’t wait to see the final results!

Have you checked out the blog Magic Flavours? I am new to it and it is quickly becoming a favorite. Not only are there great recipes, but the author writes each post in English, Portuguese and Spanish!

My latest post at the The 3 Star Traveler is all about finding the right source for travel advice – Ask the Right Local.

Last but not least, in case you didn’t notice Fake Food Free has a Facebook page! I hope you’ll swing by and tell me you “Like” it.

That book looks good, but I’m turned off by the back cover description’s emphasis on weight weight weight. “Dumping the fake stuff and relishing real food will help you drop pounds”; “Shape your waist”; “It’s time to be satisfied, nourished, thinner.”

I get that the majority of adults in the US are overweight and the diet angle is just a hook, but even well-meaning messages like this can quietly reinforce the notion that fat is evil and the only reason a person should eat carrots is to fit into a size 6 again.

  • Kerri May 29, 2010 at 6:12 pm

Thank you for the information about sharing recipes on blogs. I just started a blog about my family’s transition to healthier eating, and I’ve been wondering whether it’s okay to post recipes. Now I know.

  • Erica May 29, 2010 at 7:08 pm

    Thank you for the information.

  • Joanne May 30, 2010 at 5:21 am

I always love the first few days of summer but then by the middle of it, I can’t wait for fall! I’m sorry to hear that your puppy is having a hard time with the heat! Yikes.

Love these links. Your links to a healthy weekend are some of my favorite bits of the weekend!

  • Daily Spud May 30, 2010 at 11:40 am

Well, it is summer here in Ireland, though that doesn’t necessarily mean sunshine and heat 🙂 We have had some nice weather lately, but it was back to rain and cold yesterday, which is about par for the course for an Irish summer!

Thanks for the foodblogforum link – I keep meaning to spend some time over there and never seem to get the chance.

  • Sagan May 31, 2010 at 6:01 am

I really want to read Real Food Has Curves! It sounds intriguing. Thanks for all the links.

  • Lori May 31, 2010 at 6:48 am

Tamara – I completely agree. I really dislike the terminology used to market books like this, even more so that the terminology is the reason some people buy them. I do read them though (usually via library instead of buying) because I typically find good points even if the focus isn’t what I think it should be. For me, it’s important to know what they are about because sadly this kind of book does attract people and I want to be informed to answer questions should I receive them from people wondering what I think as a nutritionist.

Kerri – You are welcome! It was helpful to me too.

    Erica – You are welcome!

Joanne – Thanks! I’m so glad you like this series. I am with you regarding the seasons. Fall is my very favorite and about July 4th I’ll be ready for it!

Daily Spud – Thanks for reminding me that summer has varying definitions. Ha, ha! After a few hot, humid days around here I could use an Irish summer. Perhaps we could trade a few weeks. 😉 I don’t spend nearly enough time on the site either, but each time I check it out there is always something helpful.

Sagan – Yeah, I really want to see what it is all about.

  • MelindaRD May 31, 2010 at 8:19 am

I am hoping summer gets here soon. They say this is the worst winter they have had here in a while. More rain than usual.

  • Anna May 31, 2010 at 9:55 am

Awwwww, your dog looks adorable chilling, the weather here in LA is amazing, I’m loving it every minute. There is this ocean breeze that always makes my house feels fresh, and the sky is bright and blue. I’m in love. Thank you for all your amazing links, you always show me something great.

  • Tangled Noodle June 2, 2010 at 2:14 pm

Always love your ‘Links’! I’m curious about “Real Food Has Curves”; although I still use some processed ingredients (primarily canned items), I’d like to try to cook as ‘naturally’ as possible. Of course, it’s much easier in the summer! I’m so happy that the warm weather has arrived after a particularly harsh winter here in MN. Our dog is happier, too – he never enjoyed sinking into deep snow! 😎

  • Links to a Healthy Weekend

    August 29, 2009

I’m happy to say that I’m back with some great links this weekend. I hope you are having an enjoyable Saturday! It is bright and sunny here, but the temps are creeping up ever so slightly, not letting us forget that a hot summer is right around the corner!
On this last weekend in August, I find that my thoughts of food are looking forward to the autumn ahead (in the northern hemisphere anyway). I’m having visions of apples, pumpkins, hot cider and, as premature as this may be, I’ve even bookmarked a few cookie recipes I’ve come across for my holiday baking!

So are you finding yourself hanging on to the final days and foods of summer or are you ready to open your arms to cool-weather comfort food?

On to some of my favorite reads this week…

My Feasts had a post for the Indian dish Matar Paneer – a recipe including grilled cheese, peas and wonderfully spiced tomato sauce. The grilled chunks of cheese reminded me of the kind they grill here in Brazil at the churrascos. With all those flavorful spices I really want to give this one a try.

Vegetarian Perspective offered up a great Pineapple Salsa recipe to extend the flavors of summer a little bit longer. I’ve had mango and peach salsas but I’m not sure I’ve experimented with pineapple. Sounds great!

The American Council on Exercise published an editorial in response to a recent Time article which proposed by exercise won’t make a person thin. They, of course, make great, scientifically accurate points. Keep exercising!

The American Heart Association (AHA) is recommending a crack down on sugar consumption. Previously there have not be any specific recommendations on intake, but now the AHA is speaking out to say that women should limit intake to 100 calories or 6 teaspoons and men 150 calories are 9 teaspoons. Some research suggests we consume an average of 22 teaspoons a day! I’m now wondering how HFCS fits in the picture though. I haven’t done an extensive amount of sifting through the recommendation and related articles yet.

In other, maybe controversial, news, I found the article Is Whole Foods Losing Its Sustainable Luster? to be really interesting. The food store has been in the news a lot lately. I really don’t have an opinion to state one way or another at this point because I don’t feel I’m as fully informed. I just thought I’d share the article for those who may be interested.

    Have a great weekend!

I have embraced fall already – if only in my mind! It’s still humid and hot here. Have a great weekend!

  • Debinhawaii August 30, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Interesting links this week–thanks for posting them!

  • Erica August 30, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Hey hey! I am SO looking forward to apples and pumpkin too 🙂 But not chilly weather! I want to keep the heat. Great salsa recipe. That Time article irritated me a bit….like we need an excuse not to exercise haha

  • Usman Pasha Siddiqui August 30, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I could spend an entire week eating palak paneer!!!

  • sangeeta August 31, 2009 at 2:10 am

OysterCulture – It is a beautiful one. I try to enjoy for at least a bit every day. 🙂

Emily – It’s so crazy, I just have to look from time to time. 🙂

    Chow and Chatter – Thanks!

Reeni – Oh, me too. I love the fall season so much!

Deb – Glad you liked them!

Erica – Yeah, I know, those articles are never good for those of us working in exercise trying to convince people that it is very important (because it is!). Just gives people an excuse for their I don’t want/like to exercise fire. 🙂

Usman – I can’t wait to give it a try myself!

sangeeta – Thanks so much for the link!

Meg and Sophie – You’re welcome!

  • Juliana September 1, 2009 at 1:56 pm

    Thanks for the links 🙂

  • Tangled Noodle September 1, 2009 at 7:03 pm

It’s turning cooler now (a little too early, if you ask me) and it has me thinking a lot about soup lately! 😎

Thanks for the links, especially the ones regarding exercise and sugar intake. The latter is particularly bad news to me – I don’t have to measure to know that I far exceed the AHA’s recommendation now!

  • Sagan September 1, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Thanks for these great links! That’s awesome about the sugar crack-down, and I think that that’s an excellent point about Whole Foods. I love the exercise rebuttal to the Times article, too.

  • Gaby September 2, 2009 at 7:55 am

cool links this week! Hope you’re having an excellent day!

  • Lori September 2, 2009 at 11:33 am

    Glad you liked the links!

TN – I think most of us are in the same boat regarding the sugar. Even when you try to eat healthy sugar is still everywhere!

  • Links to a Healthy Weekend

    March 29, 2009

Whoa! Is it seriously the last weekend of March? It simply doesn’t seem possible.
This week has not been without frustration for me. Our Internet service here has been a bit of a battle since day one. It had been doing well for the past few months and within the past week we have had more problems than I can count. After losing for two days solid a couple weeks ago, it then worked for about a week. It went out for another day, was repaired and it has been on, off, on, off for hours at a time since.
We had another man out last night to repair it and we hope it will be good for a while, but I have to admit I just keep waiting for a page not to load and the lights to be blinking randomly on the modem.
I am a big fan of a break from screen time, but very much enjoy it when it is a voluntary break and not a forced one. I feel like I’m trying to play catch up with work every time service returns and since the web is my access to phone I had to miss an important conference call regarding a book I’m coauthoring with an organization I blog for.
So this explains why the links are late this week and why you probably haven’t seen me commenting around your blogs. Fortunately I was able to find several great links early this week when things were still running smoothly. Here’s hoping for a better week coming up!
    I hope you’ve had a wonderful weekend!

food for living had a recipe for S’mores Oatmeal. What a great idea! I’d probably leave out the energy bar to lower calories and try to find the most natural graham cracker I could, but this is a great oats idea.

use real butter had a recipe for Sticky Toffee Pudding. This is one of those desserts I’ve always wanted to try, but haven’t been in the right place at the right time. This one looks delicious!

Everyday Cookin’ showed off some fabulous looking Crispy Fish Tacos. I’m sure they taste as good as they look. I can’t wait to give them a try!

Pizza-making machine has Italian chefs in a spin was an article on Yahoo News. This had to be the week’s most interesting read. I really think the chefs need not worry. I can’t imagine a vending machine being able to compete with the food in Italian restaurants. Although I’m headed to Italy this summer and I’ll definitely be taking a picture if I come across one.

In case you missed it Michelle who formerly blogged at What Does Your Body Good? has launched a beautiful, brand new site along with her exciting new business – Find Your Balance Health Counseling & Yoga. She’s giving away a Kripalu Cookbook of gourmet vegetarian recipes to celebrate so go check it out!

Ahh so sorry about the internet issues!! Glad you’re back now though 🙂

Enjoy what’s left of the weekend and of March!! Time sure does fly!!

  • Daily Spud March 29, 2009 at 8:18 am

I can imagine just how frustrating your internet issues are for you – I know what it’s been like when I’ve had issues with my own provider.

As for the sticky toffee pudding, would you believe that I made some just this weekend and will be posting about it soon – the version you linked to looks fab!

  • Ricki March 29, 2009 at 8:48 am

Aren’t computers just the craziest? We’ve gotta have ’em, yet they do all wonkers on us. . . glad it’s sorted out. And thanks for the great links.

PS I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S THE LAST WEEKEND IN MARCH, EITHER! YIKES.

  • Tangled Noodle March 29, 2009 at 9:39 am

Erratic connections drive me crazy! Sorry to hear about the problems and hope they’ll work themselves out. But now you’ve piqued my interest: you’re coauthoring a book? I hope that you’ll tell us more about it when you’re ready.

Thanks for the great links, as usual! The pizza story caught my eye, too – I’m considering a post that might reference it but I’m trying to work out the angle first. 😎

Enjoy the remainder of your weekend!

  • Reeni♥ March 29, 2009 at 1:44 pm

I keep hearing how delicious Sticky Toffee pudding is. I would love to try it or make it. Sorry your having such trouble with your Internet. I am frustrated too, my desktop caught a virus this week, luckily I have my trusty laptop as a back-up.

  • Heather March 29, 2009 at 1:49 pm

    s’mores oatmeal?! yum!

  • Sapuche March 29, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Good luck conquering your Internet problems. I agree with you that it’s nice to take a break from the Internet, but only when it’s voluntarily done! Grrr. Thanks for sharing these links, and good luck getting the most out of your limited time! I can’t believe it’s nearly April, either…Oh, and I want to hear more about your book, too. Exciting!

  • Candice March 30, 2009 at 7:25 am

So sorry about your internet problems – that is so frustrating!! I hope things will be good to go now!

I can’t wait to hear more about your book – how exciting!

  • ChefBliss.com March 30, 2009 at 10:40 am

Great links. I saw the pizza machine in another article and thought I would be happy to stick with homemade!! 🙂 Thanks for your comment on my blog: Good to know they still keep eggs out in Brazil — my dad reminded me of that but I still go with the fridge option. I wonder if it’s something in (or not in) the eggs? Have a great week!

  • jesse March 30, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Ugh, internet trouble is very frustrating indeed. Hopes yours holds out!

  • MizFit March 31, 2009 at 2:46 am

net troubles? computer troubles? all a crazymaker for me as well.

    now, about that s’mores oatmeal….

    🙂

  • Lori March 31, 2009 at 6:15 am

Thanks everyone! Just a quick reply today. Internet has still been on and off so I’m trying to catch up with work while I have the chance.

Daily Spud and Reeni – I can’t wait to see your stick toffee pudding when you make it! I want to try it sometime too, but I need to figure out if we have dates around here.

Tangled Noodle – Can’t wait to see your post about the pizza maker. I have no doubt you will come up with a very interesting angle.

ChefBliss – I’ve wondered the same thing about the eggs. I haven’t been able to figure it out yet.

jesse – thanks for stopping by with your comment. Things aren’t completely worked out but I am getting some spurts of service from time to time.

About the book, I’ll let you know more as it progresses, but I’m coauthoring a book about event planning for charity events through the blog I work for. Kind of compiling posts we’ve done into a published text. I’m very excited about it since it will be my first book publication. I’ll keep you posted!
