I rarely make smoothies. I’ve just never been that into them. I’m confident this has to do with the fact that I simply don’t like the name smoothie. We’ve talked about this before, right? It’s kind of how some people dislike the word foodie (which I’m okay with, by the way).
So if I do make something that resembles a smoothie, it’s called a breakfast shake. On occasion, a breakfast shake is just the thing I want first thing in the morning. This is especially true when I have some killer ingredients to use in them.
When I received those figs from the California Fig Board several weeks ago, a shake turned out to be a great way to use them.
I was unsure of the combination, but it turns out that a chocolate fig banana shake is pretty outstanding. So much so that I repeated the combo until I ran out of the sweet Brown Turkey Figs. You can use any type of fig you want, but I found the sweetness of this variety was perfect for the shake.
Chocolate Fig Breakfast Shake

What you’ll need:
4 brown turkey figs, quartered
1 frozen banana
1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon milk (any variety)
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon old-fashioned rolled oats
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
How to make it:
Place all ingredients in a single serving blender. Pulse in 15 to 20 second intervals until all ingredients are blended and smooth. Pour into a glass and serve.
