This berry salad combines blackberries and strawberries with fresh herbs from the garden. It’s my celebration of access to so much delicious local produce all summer long.
A couple of weeks into the month of May, it dawned on me that I have yet to live in a place where so many of summer’s fruits and vegetables are in season at the same time.
I realized it when I stopped by the farm stand to grab some berries and found myself staring at cherries, strawberries, boysenberries, blackberries and blueberries. All local, all harvested that morning just a few feet away.
I mean, most of us combine these foods all summer thanks to food transport around the country. But in most places, locally grown strawberries are long gone by the time blackberries roll around. So I consider myself pretty lucky and to show my appreciation I feel like it’s only appropriate to enjoy some super seasonal dishes like this berry salad.
As you can image, we’ve stayed pretty well stocked with berries and there is no sign that this will end anytime soon. With plenty of strawberries and blackberries to use up, I decided to combine them in a sweet and savory side dish. Our basil plant is still looking wonderful in the garden, and it’s no surprise that the mint is loving its new space in the corner of the raised bed. These seemed a perfect addition to the salad.
For the salty addition, I went with feta, but I could see how a delicious goat cheese would work well, too.
Finally, I finished it off with a drizzle of a high quality extra virgin olive oil. This is optional, but I find the grassy, peppery bite is just what this berry salad needs to come together.
